In 1982 I was continously travelling between Italy and United States where while living in the Soho area of New York City, I encountered the overflow of graffiti and street art. http://filorenzo.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/1-1-1024×697.
Around the same time Keith Haring’s brillant idea to draw with white chalks on the black subway posters suggested me that this practice was embracing well with the typical appropriation mode and graphic quality of my Filo.
Thus when I discovered that in Rome the 6X3 mt billboards were covered with white paper (the white mourning of publicity) I started a series of interventions that I later called Filografia Urbana/Urban Filography.
They became the ideal surface for receiving my fast and primary sign and signature. I produced about 100 billboards in a few years span.
After my definitive transfer in Florence in the early ‘90ies I resumed the Filografia Urbana painting about 150 billboards sometime also over the zinc surface of the freshly installed billboards.
In 1998 came the first institutional recognition with the show titled FILO EVENTI commissioned by the Cultural Affair of the City of Prato and the Museo Pecci. The project involving my Artist in Presence in Corso Mazzoni and a multivision show in Piazza Datini. The project was also documented and included in the documentary film Loosing the Thread by Jonathan Nossiter produced by Silvia Lucchesi – Silvy Production. Starting in 2017 I started a new series of Filografia Urbana works but in thi case the Filo was painted in the studio and than directely applied on the city walls.
Nell’estate 2018 in concomitanza con la mostra di Marina Abramovic The Cleaner a Firenze ho realizzato una nuova serie di interventi di Filografia Urbana (circa 150) su carta incollata culminati nella performance Artist in Presence since 1979 avvenuta il 20 Settembre giorno dell’inaugurazione della mostra a Palazzo Strozzi.
In the summer 2018 concurrently with the Marina Abramovic show The Cleaner in Florence, I realized a new series of Filografia Urbana (about 150) on glued paper. The series culminated in my performance Artist in Presence since 1979 executed on september 20th the day of the inauguration of the show at Palazzo Strozzi.
